On May 8, Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) is commemorated worldwide. On this day in 1945, Nazi Germany capitulated, ending the Second World War in Europe.
The center of Hengelo is illuminated in red and white in honor of this day. The colors refer to peace and freedom, but also to the Canadian flag – as a tribute to the Canadian armed forces.
The Canadian air force played an important role in the liberation of the Netherlands. Thousands of Canadian pilots supported the Allies from the air, resulting in heavy losses.
